Last year the gaming industry was pretty unanimous on one pivotal point: Puzzle Quest was the new deal-e-o. After a somewhat silent release by D3, this otherwise-snubbed puzzler all of a sudden started catching momentum, first with a few random critics and gamers across the net, and then across the entire industry. This DS/PSP debut title went from sleeper hit to legit puzzle powerhouse seemingly overnight, and as everyone would expect, there are dozens of other puzzle/adventure games following in the wake now.
The man behind Puzzle Quest, Steve Fawkner, is now often imitated, but never truly duplicated, so when it came to keeping the new puzzle adventure genre moving, he decided to take it in a slightly different direction, and the result is Puzzle Kingdoms, releasing next year on DS, Wii, and PC.
With Puzzle Kingdoms, players ditch the classic Bejewled puzzle style, and instead are treated to a new puzzle system build specifically for the game, but seemingly inspired by the Bejewled style, as well as the classic board game Labyrinth. This time around, it's all about building your kingdom from the ground up, rather than just one singular hero. You'll hire soldiers, send them into combat, recruit multiple heroes and manage their inventory, traverse the world map and conquer areas one by one, collect runes and additional items for your team, and control the entirety of the lands before all is said and done. If Puzzle Quest had a baby with something like Advance Wars or Risk, and then raised it in a life of classic RPGs, you'd have Puzzle Kingdom.
